Pontoy enjoyed depicting the bucolic landscape around Paris, and paid hommage to Post Impressionism by his use of rapid, fragmented brushstrokes of saturated patches of color that infuse his works with animated vibrancy. His brightly hued palette of bold tonalities contribute to the material density of the canvas, and his use of dramatic sunlight adds radiance and depth to the pictorial surface.
He later moved to Marocco, where he specialized in Orientalist compositions, continuing to paint with bright, contrasting pigment that brought his success both in Paris as well as in the Maghreb.
