Paul Scortesco

Scortesco left his native Roumania to study painting at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris, and participated in the Salon des Independants, Salon des Tuileries, and the Salon Nationale des Beaux Arts where he was awarded Honorary Membership. His work was exhibited in numerous official shows in Rome, Athens, Lisbon, Cairo, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
Scortesco used a brilliant palette of colors to create a highly dynamic yet harmonious picture surface depicting animated street scenes. His use of dramatic light and exaggerated theatrical perspective draws the viewer into the painting and is reminiscent of Caillebotte's angular compositions. Scortesco's application of a thick, patchwork of brushstrokes in vivid hues adds texture and depth to the picture surface, highlighting his subject matter which includes panoramic views of Venice, Palestine, Spain, Hungary and France.
