Saint Lanne studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Bordeaux under the renown master Diaz de la Pena.  In 1872, he was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and as of 1878, exhibited regularly at the salons in Paris and Bordeaux, as well as in Lyon, Lille, and Pau.  He excelled in gouache, oil, watercolor, lithograph and etching, and trained many prominent painters in his studio in Bordeaux.

His works are rich in compositional detail, and he depicts a specific quality of light that illuminates his painted scenes.  His palette is nuanced and rich in chromatic intensity, and his many compositions output reveal a virtuosic command of technique and artistic mastery.
