'View from the Balcony'

Early XXth century

Oil on wood panel

9.25 x 13 in.

$6,800

This view of Paris as seen from a balcony overlooking the Seine is reminiscent of French artist Gustave Caillebotte, whose work was profoundly influenced by photography as well as the discovery of Japanese prints in Paris at the end of the XIXth century.

In this work, cropping techniques as manifested by the tilted wrought iron, add dramatic intensity to the composition.  The choice of a palette of soft pastels applied in loose brushstrokes contributes to the light, immaterial freshness of the painting.  The dome of the Invalides and that of the Bibliotheque Nationale situated behind it look like mysterious shadows at play, and the atmospheric rendering of the painting’s surface belies its meditative quality.
